Friedlander Take 2
Lee Friedlander - Take 2
I have researched Lee Friedlander but had a problem with blogger where i lost my work so here is take 2. Friedlander was a photographer in 1970's america. he experimented with a large variety of portraits and photos, exploring various different techniques. some of these include taking spontaneous photographs - such as 'Kate'. Kate was a daughter of one of Friedlanders long known friends. Friedlander would take a lot of photos of the family and the children, they were fine and trusted Friedlander to photograph them. He was round their house and was watching Kate who was 1 year old at the time trying to lift her self up by holding onto the coffee table, Kate had always loved the camera. Friedlander watched Kate doing this and took the opportunity to photograph her. it later became one of his most well known portraits, and has a book featuring the photo. it is a simple photograph but is adored by millions as a simple photo of a young child.
as well as doing family portraits, Friedlander also worked on reflections in shop windows to show greed and how humans perceive themselves. he spent his time walking the streets of NYC with a camera searching for inspiration. here are some examples of results:
this next photo was taken during the production of his project called 'America by car' where he travelled the country taking various photos of whatever he found interesting for the project. i couldn't find much background to this photo but it was my favourite out of the ones i found. and to me it shows how different things are in today's society. when this photo was taken in 1968, going to the movies was considered a luxury, hence the man with the expensive car in the foreground. where as now this is very different. i also really enjoy the total composition of the photograph as it is all very natural.
Friedlander also focused on some shadow work portraits for a while. mainly taken in his home. there is one i would like to try to recreate because i think it speaks volumes. the shadow is taken over a door in this home, which to me is saying that there is always more than meets the eye. i can see myself recreating this image.
