grad film reseach

Image
so far I've looked into various other dance films. next I plan to look at other grad films just to give me a better idea whats expected of me. here are some of the best films I've found. this is called 'SLIP' published in 2015 under the username 'pacman' in the description they talk about how difficult it is to let go of sadness, and how ignoring it can be harmful - " Everyone will tell you it is hard to let go of pain... and it is. Since we are children we have been told to embrace the best of our experiences & disregard the worst... But what happens when the most beautiful memories from our past end up doing the most damage to our future?" - the reason why this video stood out to me is firstly because of the music and opening. the colour pallet Ithink is really similar to what I envision in my film, and I think that what drew me in. the closeness and general presence of the dancers I think encapsulates the closeness and delicacy of pain, some...

Tutorial with Kathleen

today I went in and had a tutorial with Kathleen where we discussed my ideas and then started drafting a learning agreement. idea discussion: we discussed my first idea about an immersive experience where I think she knew I wasn't totally set on the idea, clearly she was correct. I told her about my idea about EMDR, working around the subject in more detail, maybe the recreation of a session, looking more in depth into the therapy, arguments for and against it, etc. she seemed really on board immediately, which i was surprised by, but I found it reassuring that this was the right idea for me.  we discussed what my next steps should be for this project and the correct ways for me to move forward. we agreed that more research into the area and other people's experiences of the therapy would be a good next step. we also agreed the length of the film should be about 10 minutes, as it is a substantial piece of work.  Learning agreement: as I mentioned, we agreed...

memory

idea: so it begins, year 3. my plan is to use similar ideas for my dissertation and grad project, I figure it makes more sense to do something related because thats logical. so I am in-between the memory room or the EMDR therapy. the memory room is risky because its more of a fine art project, I don't know if its appropriate, will it work? how will I go about it? could I get the space? but it works with my dissertation and feels the most logical choice. the EMDR film I think would be so interesting and gives me a chance to really look in depth into the topic. as well as publicising the therapy more. but, is it boring as I've already worked with the topic? I think I'm probably going to stick with the memory room because I think its more relevant I guess.

ideas for year 3 grad film

GRAD FILM IDEAS: thinking about my work so far and everything thats gone on for me through the summer a few ideas have come to mind. 1. I am just about to begin receiving help for sexual assault. this is on my mind quite heavily at the moment and so id like to work with it. I figure maybe I could make a dance film using paint, to show the damage it causes and then the recovery. but also showing that it really can happen to anyone. because thats the truth, its something I feel needs to be discussed, and I would like to use my experience to my advantage and do something with it that isn't depressing. 2. a memory room. an immersive experience where everything will be designed to trigger a persons memories, using all the senses and also using photographs and videos. the reason why id like to explore this is mainly because it goes hand in hand with my dissertation idea of photography and memory, so it feels like the most logical choice for research and planning. 3. a panic room -...

Dance film - Idea

My Idea: I intend to create a dance film surrounding my personal experience of the work of, talking therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). I had a broken up timeline of my own life which I couldn’t join. I went to this therapy as i needed help to deal with issues i had growing up, these issues, as i hadnt dealt with them, ended up cutting themselves apart, and so looking back on my life i didnt see one string of life evening, i saw broken up fragments as individual versions of myself at different ages. this therapy takes you back to your worst moment at whatever age your breakage is, your therapist will ask you to take yourself back to that point, get you all worked up and you literally feel everything you wouldve back then. after this she asks you to look at the tips of her fingers as she moves her hand side to side, after a while she will stop and you both take a deep breath, this continues until some how your brain has been able to desensit...

Dance film - artist research

Image
ARTIST RESEARCH: after all of the various note taking and brain storming, i moved on to trying to find inspiration from other practitioners. i found some fantastic films. So for this project I have researched a number of dance films.  The first I found was called ‘Left alone’, uploaded under the username ArinaMegan, this was a DFSA film back from 2014 for the dance project, I love the effects used in the video, and the occasional blur of the moving dancers creates an almost imaginary effect. almost making the view question the reality of that person. i really like the effects used on this, however i dont like how clear it is that its being filmed in the studio, i dont understand how that fits into the context and i feel like it wouldve been better suited if the set was more dressed.  From here I began to look into various styles of dance to try and grasp an idea of what I’d like. Found other contemporary dance film such as ‘Aura’, by Deftone Digital Product...

Dance film workshop

Image
work shop with two dancers. So today we took part in a workshop with Rachel where we were lucky enough to have two dancers with us from Rachel’s university in london. They had choreographed a piece of dance for us to watch which was lovely. It included small lifts and was in a contemporary style. After this we were asked to get up with our cameras and video them, be the camera, move among them, film anyway we would like and see the dance from various different angles and perspectives. At first it’s fair to saw we were all a bit shy of filming the dancers, Rachel then asked us if anyone wanted to experiment with the dancers to do with their own ideas. Alice stepped forward and discussed her ideas. She is working with Danielle, and they plan on working with luminescent body paint, a canvas and a dancer, the premis being that the dancer will be making art whilst doing/through art. So Rachel thought about how the dancers would cover themselves in paint and asked them to take a journey ...

Studio shoot PT 1

STUDIO SHOOT: Today we were given the images for our studio shoots, the two that stuck out to me were "basement" which was a dimly lit sitting room featuring a man and a girl sitting/laying on the sofas. I loved fb soft lighting and the general homey atmosphere in the image. When the group and I looked at the images they all really liked another one by Diane Arbus which showed two older people one male and one female. They enjoyed the costume design. But overall we decided to follow a different image called "untitled" which showed two children playing hide and seek in what looks like a shed. The light coming from the window creates a lovely picturesque image which is very athstetically pleasing.

i&i mind map - pt 1

Image
this is my mindmap about what ideas I could use about maps and networks. my attempt to think outside the box. so I started by thinking about what different areas maps and networks could fit into, then thought about what that could include and what it could mean or relate to. its given me some good ideas to start with and I will continue to add and adapt the mindmap depending on where I go from here.
