grad film reseach

Image
so far I've looked into various other dance films. next I plan to look at other grad films just to give me a better idea whats expected of me. here are some of the best films I've found. this is called 'SLIP' published in 2015 under the username 'pacman' in the description they talk about how difficult it is to let go of sadness, and how ignoring it can be harmful - " Everyone will tell you it is hard to let go of pain... and it is. Since we are children we have been told to embrace the best of our experiences & disregard the worst... But what happens when the most beautiful memories from our past end up doing the most damage to our future?" - the reason why this video stood out to me is firstly because of the music and opening. the colour pallet Ithink is really similar to what I envision in my film, and I think that what drew me in. the closeness and general presence of the dancers I think encapsulates the closeness and delicacy of pain, some...

Dance film - artist research

ARTIST RESEARCH: after all of the various note taking and brain storming, i moved on to trying to find inspiration from other practitioners. i found some fantastic films. So for this project I have researched a number of dance films.  The first I found was called ‘Left alone’, uploaded under the username ArinaMegan, this was a DFSA film back from 2014 for the dance project, I love the effects used in the video, and the occasional blur of the moving dancers creates an almost imaginary effect. almost making the view question the reality of that person. i really like the effects used on this, however i dont like how clear it is that its being filmed in the studio, i dont understand how that fits into the context and i feel like it wouldve been better suited if the set was more dressed.  From here I began to look into various styles of dance to try and grasp an idea of what I’d like. Found other contemporary dance film such as ‘Aura’, by Deftone Digital Product...

Dance film - Research

New Day New Task: so a while ago we were set two tasks of which we could do one. the first, dance film. design and create, film, a dance film. the second, Fields and Frames, an incredibly wide brief where you could do anything as long as you can justify it.  original plan: so my original plan was to work on other peoples projects, as DOP, costume and Gaffer. however, after thinking about this plan, i realised i literally have no idea how to put that into a learning agreement, after plenty of emails to rosie explaining i was so lost and couldn't do it, panicking about the whole thing, genuinely thought i was going to fail and that was it. i spoke to rosie and rachel about a vague idea i had about growing up. rosie ended up just saying i should just take a shot in the dark and go for it. probably the best thing she could've said to me. so i went away and on sunday, i made 8 pages of notes, postits, mindmaps, etc. to try and formulate a solid idea: s...

Studio shoot pt 6

Research! Lighting research: Anthony B Richmond - “ Don't look now” brilliantly lit, whilst it's a dark story line the lighting created makes it clear that the director intends the audience to feel sympathy for the characters as they experience grief Nestor Almendros and Haskell Wexler - “Days of heaven” academy award winning film, beautifully lit and incredible cinematography, Almendros also worked on “Sophie's choice” another beautifully lit film. “In the mood for love” - Aloof lighting created, shadowy, absent yet still present lighting reflecting on the taboo relationship between the two central characters. “A space odyssey” - 2001 - Incredibly complex yet beautifully clear lighting, this film consistently stands the test of time. There's a synthetic lighting created during interior settings to create a white, solid, clear light, as well as a light tunnel during another scene. - worth looking into further. Designs: This design is good to mimic day li...

Marta Zawadzka "my memories" I found this really abstract image by Marta, she created it to represent the city where she was brought up with her grandparents. She says "there are my roots there is my soul." She says that the painting "is a way to show the wonder of various aspects of existence experiencing joy every day" - the reason it stood out for me is because it's such a lovely and symbolic way to manifest a memory. She is so passionate about her work and her creation. "Paintings are a bridge to my soul", how she speaks about it really grabs me, and I want to create something that makes me feel the same way.

artists research: Antakya Biennial Artist Network, 2010. - the artist created this image to visualise the results taken after a survey of over 2000 different artists at an exhibition, showing how they relate in different ways in their own networks. After the mindmap I created I wanted to visualise and create a physical network from something metaphorical and that's why this image in particular stood out to me.  Shannon Rankin: Rankin does a lot of work around various physical states of the map. She uses them to create anything from 3D sculptures to images on photoshop. One particular image stood out to me, she has designed human hearts made out of maps that are connected to one another. I think it reflects on each persons individually and how they can connect in different ways on different levels. She says when explaining her work: " Maps are the everyday metaphors that speak to the fragile and transitory state of our lives and our surroundings. Rivers shift the...

Inspiration! So, today my friends and I went to Thorpe park for the day. Whilst we were there we tried the new ride "Derren Brown's Ghost train" (SPOILERS FOR THE RIDE TO FOLLOW). During the experience, a hologram was shown to us of Derren just before the experience started, I can honestly say it was the most incredible use of projection I've ever witnessed in my life it was amazing. The clarity and realistic quality was impeccable. Anyway, once is calmed down after the experience, on the car journey home the thought occurred to me, I could use hologram, or similar projection, in this concept. So I began designing it in my head. My concept:  My concept would be a specific outline of a male, army body, similar to the sort of stereo types you'd find during WW1 on posters and propaganda. It would be a simple Black outline projected onto a white background, with the words "I WANT YOU" written in the projection above. I would also provide the prop of ...

"You are needed now" - Ruzzie Green - 1943. After more research into war propaganda I stumbled across this poster for WW2. Created to try and enlist women to be war nurses for the soldiers. This poster was part of a collection of propaganda called "world war poster collection", which contained various different images trying to get the public to enlist for various different roles including nurses, soldiers, engineers and doctors. The image shows a beautiful woman, wearing make up, also wearing army coloured items, hat and jacket, and cargo coloured shirt and tie. This appeals to the "American dream" image, in so far as it's a very put together woman waiting hopefully for the chance to help behind the front lines as her man fights. This reflects upon the idealist qualities American culture seems to crave according to current politic leaders and their history of politics. That not everyone should do every job, and these types of posters are a small s...

Trumps latest demand: So I know in a previous post I spoke about how I wanted to work on something that had effected me directly, that's changed. Today in the news trump came out with the news that he didn't want transgender women in the U CNN - " President Donald Trump on Friday directed the military not to move forward with an Obama-era plan that would have allowed transgender individuals to be recruited into the armed forces, following through on his intentions announced a month earlier to ban transgender people from serving.   The presidential memorandum also bans the Department of Defense from using its resources to provide medical treatment regimens for transgender individuals currently serving in the military." - further links: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/08/25/politics/trump-transgender-military/index.html Since I heard I have felt passionately angry about this. Therefore I have decided to design a concept based around this,...
