Portraits PT 3
today I decided to embark on my testing of shadow effects. the reason I have decided to do this effect is due to finding this photograph of Friedlander. he took this in his home, and I think it speaks volumes about how there is always more than meets the eye as it was his shadow taken over a door. you can never know a person fully unless they give you the key to open that door, I find this statement made by the photograph very profound and it speaks deeply about a sense of identity.
this photo I found in one of his books that I borrowed from the library. I couldn't find an image online and so I took a photo from the book. I decided to try and recreate it but with my own twist.
this was my result:
this was my first one. I took this one just to get a feel for what I was doing. I am not happy with this image because I don't like the composition. the lighting does not do this justice.I enjoy this one a lot. I like how the light is very clear above my shoulder and how it gives the photo more depth than it had, this is what I refer to as my own twist. the light shows a more personal element about what kind of person the subject is, and how there is light within darkness. this connects to the photos from shoot 2 where the light would reflect on my hair, although this photo wasn't taken in black and white, because I used a white backing light for the photograph it kind of keeps that element of black and white photography without the use of editing. I enjoy the technical elements of this shoot, the lighting I used and the planning I thought of, I think it all came together brilliantly to create a clean shadow with a lot of depth.
to do this shoot I used two large torches that we had in my house, we have both yellow and white, but I didn't want the yellow tint as I wanted to show light and purity rather than a tinge of yellow which I don't think would have looked very good. over all I am very happy, and I don't feel like I need to take more shoots.
