Portrait series - PT.1
FIRST IDEA'S:
Transgender/non-conforming to gender stereotypes. - very passionate about the topic, inspired primarily by Ceira's project with paint for the last portraits project.
life of a carer - a topic close to my heart, seems logical, I have the access so might as well use it
International friends - I have friends all over the world who I am traveling to meet this summer, thought it would be cool to include them
International slang - a slang term used in other countries in their native language - using my international friends to get this information.
MEETING WITH LEAH:
After discussing my ideas with leah we decided that probably the gender stereotypes idea would work well using the set and props to clearly symbolise their gender.
TEST SHOOT:
I performed a test shoot to see how I felt about it. however during the shoot I became extremely frustrated with the set and I couldn't bring myself to take any photos because I was never happy with the message being portrayed or the positioning of items as it was all being staged and I couldn't get along with it.
SECOND MEETING WITH LEAH:
told her about the horrible test shoot and how I was really struggling with the idea of staging the environment. I was very upset and was panicking over the fact my idea wasn't working for me. Leah and I then discussed my previous ideas and decided that the 'life of a carer' idea was probably my most promising. we discussed an artist called Mathew Finn who took photos of his mum and named the series 'Mother'. the photographs were taken in a classical style in black and white, leah said it would be fantastic if I researched more into his work and maybe used that for inspiration. I then looked into his work at home and found him really interesting and I really enjoyed the classical style he used. and so I decided to follow that with the portraits I would take.
I also took inspiration from my first researched artist Lee Friedlander, as all of his portraits were spontaneous and unstaged which is the exact approach I want to take for this project. Friedlander is probably going to remain my biggest inspiration throughout a few of my projects as his work has stayed with me since I first found his work. his work is perfectly imperfect. its taken in the moment and is all genuine and untouched, I hope to achieve this within my future work.
