INTERVIEW WITH CARER:
as part of my research I choose to conduct an interview with the carer (also my mum) Anne Probert. my reason for this was because I wanted to give the most accurate view of her role as possible and to do that I wanted to hear her thoughts. I conducted the interview but I am currently having trouble uploading it. but she said that its all about the person being cared for, its about their lives remaining theirs and she assists them in doing so. she said she felt it was important to remember this constantly through out her role so that they don't feel she is taking over or anything. its important to keep the persons independence.
SPEAKING TO THE PERSON BEING CARED FOR:
The man I will be working with is called Graham Smithers (my step dad). he is a stroke survivor who has recovered best he can. he had his stroke in 2005/2006. he was in hospital for 6 months with my mum helping him with his recovery. I also interviewed him to see what his thoughts were about the carer aspect of his life. he said that he felt he wouldn't be able to function day to day without her help. and how her assisting him with the smaller things in life, like his dog for example, made his every day so much easier to manage. he told me how grateful he is for her help and how he doesn't think he would have recovered without her and what a great team they are together.
The way he referred to them as a team really stuck with me and I decided I wanted to focus around this when I took the photographs. I wanted to give a clear portrayal of the team work they have and how they work together to complete small tasks. for example, during a test shoot I got a lovely photograph of Anne helping Graham take off his jumper. which I think clearly shows how they work together to accomplish small things which able bodied people take for granted. however the reason I didn't use this photo in my final series is because I wasn't too happy with the exposure and I feel it was too dark so unfortunately I wasn't able to use it. also I wanted to keep all the photos naturalistic and completely upstaged and so I couldn't ask them to repeat the action. taking photographs in this way is a blessing and a curse because you get really genuine emotions but also cant repeat them.
