advanced photography 2
Studio:
today Beytan took us into G28, the main photography studio. he spoke to us about two artists, Karivagio and Rembrant. two triditional fine art painters who developed different styles of lighting in their paintings almost becoming pioneers for their talents. Beytan then started to teach us what we would need to know for assessment. the reason why we were in the photography studio talking about paintings was because it is possible to create the same lighting for photography.
he introduced us to wide and narrow lighting, saying how they are good foundations to begin portrait photography. wide lighting is where, in the camera's view, the light is illuminating the visually widest part of the face. and narrow is the opposite, where the light is illuminating the visually smaller half of the face. he used alice to demonstrate his point, and managed to take some beautiful photographs of her by having created different lighting.
he then went on to discuss the different ways to position your subject to achieve different expression and stance. he told us to firstly ask your participant to sit up straight, and from there, there are a number of things you can do. he taught us about triditional female portraits and how they would be positioned, and the same with male.
he taught us how to use and set up Brollys and soft boxes correctly, he also refreshed our memories on how to set up flash and how to use light meters, he also helped all of us set up our cameras and told us that on a standard 55mm lens, 35 is the same zoom as the view you get from the human eye, which means that when you take a photo it wont look distorted from the lens.
we then went on to have a go our selves photographing one another, creating the correct lighting with continuity. he told us how he doesnt want it to be a performance piece, how he wants us to capture the subjects natural andreal expression, he doesnt want it forced or faked, which means getting out subject to relax and feel comfortable, hopefully we get someone chatty because that usually helps people relax.
i found this workshop extremely interesting, taking photographs of Ben, Ollie and Suzie was great fun and really interesting. bring on next week!
