Politics - pt 6

Inspiration! So, today my friends and I went to Thorpe park for the day. Whilst we were there we tried the new ride "Derren Brown's Ghost train" (SPOILERS FOR THE RIDE TO FOLLOW). During the experience, a hologram was shown to us of Derren just before the experience started, I can honestly say it was the most incredible use of projection I've ever witnessed in my life it was amazing. The clarity and realistic quality was impeccable. Anyway, once is calmed down after the experience, on the car journey home the thought occurred to me, I could use hologram, or similar projection, in this concept. So I began designing it in my head. My concept:  My concept would be a specific outline of a male, army body, similar to the sort of stereo types you'd find during WW1 on posters and propaganda. It would be a simple Black outline projected onto a white background, with the words "I WANT YOU" written in the projection above. I would also provide the prop of ...

"You are needed now" - Ruzzie Green - 1943. After more research into war propaganda I stumbled across this poster for WW2. Created to try and enlist women to be war nurses for the soldiers. This poster was part of a collection of propaganda called "world war poster collection", which contained various different images trying to get the public to enlist for various different roles including nurses, soldiers, engineers and doctors. The image shows a beautiful woman, wearing make up, also wearing army coloured items, hat and jacket, and cargo coloured shirt and tie. This appeals to the "American dream" image, in so far as it's a very put together woman waiting hopefully for the chance to help behind the front lines as her man fights. This reflects upon the idealist qualities American culture seems to crave according to current politic leaders and their history of politics. That not everyone should do every job, and these types of posters are a small s...

Trumps latest demand: So I know in a previous post I spoke about how I wanted to work on something that had effected me directly, that's changed. Today in the news trump came out with the news that he didn't want transgender women in the U CNN - " President Donald Trump on Friday directed the military not to move forward with an Obama-era plan that would have allowed transgender individuals to be recruited into the armed forces, following through on his intentions announced a month earlier to ban transgender people from serving.   The presidential memorandum also bans the Department of Defense from using its resources to provide medical treatment regimens for transgender individuals currently serving in the military." - further links: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/08/25/politics/trump-transgender-military/index.html Since I heard I have felt passionately angry about this. Therefore I have decided to design a concept based around this,...

Joshua Allen Harris, "Installations," 2012 Harris is an American artist who created these pieces of art to open the public's eyes about urban living and the state of the environment. He created situational installations on subway grates, using plastic pages to create animal physics which became 3D when placed over the draft from the subway vents. They are very skilled and really interesting to see the irony he has created by using non-environmentally friendly materials to create animals in built up public areas when naturally these animals would be in the wild, perhaps hinting at the amount of built up areas and the lack of natural habitat?

Politics year 2 - pt 1 This summer project was given to us in order to introduce us to our new tutor for the year. This really excited me because it's a chance for me to show creativity. First of all I thought about what has effected me and what I care about most in politics. I decided that I wanted to stay away from broad issues for example, trump, Obama, conservative's, I wanted this to focus more on specific issues or rules made by these people, rules that I have strong feelings about. So upon researching artists I came across " Wu Yuren, "The Sparks Program," - 2008. Yuren's work focused around Beijing's section 8 coloney. To create this set of images they gathered seven labours in a room with a pile of flint and metal, meaning they would create sparks. They were in a dark room, the reason for this was to represent the isolation of Chinese workers during Beijing's real estate boom. And from this made some incredible images. This really inspired...

"Conflict Kitchen," 2010 So this one is a little bit different and that's why it's stood out to me. This is a piece of service industry public installation created by two artists called  Dawn Weleski  and  Jon Rubin  who created a take out stand in Pittsburg in 2010, only serving food from the country's America was at war with. This made a huge public point about the question, "how would we cope without these countries?", when they each contribute something to America. This piece really stood out for me because it's not your average piece of art work or installation, it pushes the boundaries and it's unusual, and that's why it caught my eye. It's got me thinking about what I could do that's more modern and out of the box?
