Portraits PT5 - My Final Piece

Image
My Final Piece after a lot of thought about which I felt was my strongest, I still found it very hard. so I went around and asked my friends what they thought. I them found some photography year 2/3 students and asked their opinions as they were doing a course based on it. I showed them my final 3 and asked what they liked and why. One year 3 student called Ellie said, 'Personally, I really like the shadow piece. I haven't seen a lot of photographs like this and I enjoy the fact that it is different. it also shows the most technical ability out of the 3, it looks deliberate and as though you went to take it with more intention in mind than the other two photographs. I also really like how it relates so strongly to Freedlander's original piece but still shows different depth and originality.' Another student called Phoebe who was year 2 said, 'I like the shadow piece best because its unusual. its not what I would first think of when people say the word 'po...

Portraits PT 4 - Final 3

Image
Final 3 after spending hours looking over all of my images I managed to finally condense them down to my favourite 3. unfortunately after reviewing them I decided not to use any of the photographs taken in shoot 2 as I felt they were the least effective. this was very disappointing as I like the images I just feel that they are unsuitable for this particular project. here are my 3 choices and why I chose each one.  this is a reflective image I took during shoot 1 with my model Savina Simmons. I took this after viewing inspiration from Freedlanders work on reflections in shop windows. the reason I have chosen this one in my final 3 is because of the 3 reflections that are created. I hadn't thought I would end up with 3, but after experimenting I found that there were 3. I feel that it gives the photo a lot of depth by creating 3 visuals of Savina, it was difficult the frame this in order to show all three as we didn't have a lot of room, but I am proud that I was able to ...

Portraits PT3

Image
Portraits PT 3 today I decided to embark on my testing of shadow effects. the reason I have decided to do this effect is due to finding this photograph of Friedlander. he took this in his home, and I think it speaks volumes about how there is always more than meets the eye as it was his shadow taken over a door. you can never know a person fully unless they give you the key to open that door, I find this statement made by the photograph very profound and it speaks deeply about a sense of identity. this photo I found in one of his books that I borrowed from the library. I couldn't find an image online and so I took a photo from the book. I decided to try and recreate it but with my own twist. this was my result:  this was my first one. I took this one just to get a feel for what I was doing. I am not happy with this image because I don't like the composition. the lighting does not do this justice.  I enjoy this one a lot. I like how the light is very clear abov...

Portraits - Reflections PT2

Image
Portraits PT 2 After looking through my previous reflective portraits with Savina I decided to follow that up with different kinds of reflections in my own home. Taking photos within my own home gives a different message to the viewer. I think it shows my home life and environment, an insight into the photographers life. this is part of my second shoot from this project, as i wanted to experiment more before I decided on a final image. here are a couple of examples of photos I ended up with.  this one was taken in my living room. I love the contrast of colours in this photo. most of it is dark however towards the top of the photo the light begins to show, it shines onto my hair which ignites a fiery red colour from my head, it shows that through dark patches there will be light and a splash of intense colour which to me represents emotion. almost as if the photo is showing that despite hard times things always have potential to get better and there are always good bits, you j...

Friedlander Take 2

Image
Lee Friedlander - Take 2 I have researched Lee Friedlander but had a problem with blogger where i lost my work so here is take 2. Friedlander was a photographer in 1970's america. he experimented with a large variety of portraits and photos, exploring various different techniques. some of these include taking spontaneous photographs - such as 'Kate'. Kate was a daughter of one of Friedlanders long known friends. Friedlander would take a lot of photos of the family and the children, they were fine and trusted Friedlander to photograph them. He was round their house and was watching Kate who was 1 year old at the time trying to lift her self up by holding onto the coffee table, Kate had always loved the camera. Friedlander watched Kate doing this and took the opportunity to photograph her. it later became one of his most well known portraits, and has a book featuring the photo. it is a simple photograph but is adored by millions as a simple photo of a young child. as we...

Portraits PT1

Portraits: Today I went out with a vague idea of what kind of portraits I wanted to take based on my research of photographer Lee Friedlander. As he focused of reflections for some of his projects I decided to try and take some of my own to see if I could create an effect. That being said I also wanted to add my own twist onto it to make it my own. So not only did I focus on reflections, I also focused on what location I wanted to take the reflections, so that I could show the relationship between the person and their past. for me this project is about remembering where you came from and where you are now and ever forgetting how you got there. I asked my friend savina to model for me and she did a fantastic job as you will see from the following images. I took these in a place I used to hang out in Farnham that not many people at the uni know of. I am very proud of where I came from, no matter where I am now, and its important to me that its represented accurately in these images ...
